Next week Bushrangers v Super Kings and Cobras v Renegades.

The teams for the opening round of LPL 2015 have been announced. Such has been the demand this year for places in the tournament that three teams will have the use of a sub fielder, having named a squad of 7 for the 6 player tournament. Many eager squad members will have to sit out week 1 but will be looking to make an impact next week.

The defending champions, Cobras, have named a strong team with a mixture of youth and experience. Cobras have added Steve Hackett and Cathal Reynolds to their squad this year. Captain Asif Shahab will be looking to start this years campaign as they ended LPL 2014. The Cobras take on the Super Kings in the first round. The Super Kings also have plenty of experience with some of the top run scorers for the club in the squad. Niranjan Srinivasan and Nigel Aspinall will hope their form in Munster cricket will continue in the fast paced LPL.

In the second game the Dingos face the Bushrangers. The Bushrangers have made a few changes to their line up since last season. Only James Spencer, Darren Cheatley, Eoghan O'Sullivan and Stephen Cheatley remain in the squad with James taking the captaincy this season. Injury and other commitments mean they won't have the advantage of a sub fielder for the first round. However they have named a strong team for week 1. The Dingos could be this years dark horse with 5 unknown players plus the explosive batting of Shane Burke and the experience of Alan Lynch. They are captained by the youngest ever captain of an LPL side. Harry Broadhurst will lead out the Dingos against the Bushrangers this Wednesday night.

The first weekend of fixtures was an all-round success with members commenting on how enjoyable the matches were. Both games were very close with wins for the Fennagh Renegades and the Crecora Cobras. The Croom Bushrangers batted first in the opening game of the tournament. Eoghan O'Sullivan became the first wicket lost in the league when he was run out without facing a ball, leaving the Bushrangers 1 down with no runs on the board. The Bushrangers eventually made 68 which the Renegades chased down without losing any wickets. An opening pairing with the experience of John Lenehan and the youthful John Moloney guiding the Renegades to a comfortable win. In the second game the Cobras inserted Dooradoyle Heat after winning the toss. Alan Lynch top scored for the Heat and remained unbeaten as the Heat made 68 off their allotted overs. Chasing the same target as the Renegades in the opening game the Cobras chase began quite different from that of the Renegades. The Cobras got off to the worst possible start as Waqas Jamel played on to the first ball of the innings. Kevin Hennessy failed to last the opening over as he was caught behind square without scoring. Asif Shahab followed next also without scoring leaving the Cobras a big chase with only 3 wickets left. But Inam Ulhaq and Gavin Deveraux showed real class and composure as they slowly chipped away at the run rate. Both were unbeaten and Inam top scored on the night with 39*. It was unfortunate that winning runs came off a wide with only 4 balls left in the innings. Next week the Rhebogue Rebels make their debut in the league while the Bushrangers and the Heat will be looking for their first win at the second time of asking and the Cobras can be the first team to record back to back wins. Next weeks fixtures: Friday 10th, Rhebogue Rebels v Crecora Cobras 7pm, Croom Bushrangers v Dooradoyle Heat 8pm.
